Latin America provided 27% of all visitors to the U.S. The lion's share --- about two thirds --- of Latin American arrivals comes from Mexico, accounting for just under 8.5 million arrivals. I'll be discussing this market in more detail in just a moment.

South America, one of the shining stars in the international tourism arena, comprised 22% of the Latin American arrivals pie with more than 2.8 million arrivals, gaining 2 percentage points of market share and about 200,000 more travelers than registered in 1996.

The Caribbean provides 1.2 million arrivals, while Central America makes up just over half a million arrivals. In this presentation I will comment on those two Latin American regions -- the first time we've taken a look at these regional traveler characteristics. Just to dispel any misguided notions, let me add now that the traveler from the Caribbean stays in the U.S. an average 10.5 nights while his Central American counterpart says even longer, 14.1 nights on average. These are NOT weekend shoppers!
