In 1998, we actually experienced a record year for U.S. residents traveling outside of the country and the money they spend, known as "payments".

The fact is that we, as U.S. citizens, travel in far greater numbers than we host. By 1999 Tourism Industries estimates that 12.8 million more residents will be traveling abroad, including to Canada and Mexico, than international travelers will be visiting our country.
