U.S. Citizen International Travel up Nine Percent in January 2014

U.S. citizen outbound totaled 4.5 million travelers for the first month of 2014
Strong Traffic to the Caribbean, Central America, Middle East and Mexico (Air)

January 2014/2013 Comparisons

U.S. travel to overseas markets⁽¹⁾ totaled 2.0 million, up four percent in January.
Regional results were:

• Europe, 578,000 travelers, up three percent
• Caribbean, 498,000 travelers, up seven percent
• Asia, 376,000 travelers, up one percent
• Central America, 219,000 travelers, up 10 percent
• South America, 128,000 travelers, up two percent
• Middle East, 140,000 travelers, up nine percent
• Oceania, 52,000 travelers, up one percent
• Africa, 24,000 travelers, down eight percent

U.S. travel to North American markets totaled 2.48 million, up 13 percent in January.

• Mexico, 2.0 million travelers, up 16 percent; air travel (549,000) was also up 16 percent
• Canada, 476,000 travelers, flat; air travel (188,000) up one percent

January 2014 Market Share

U.S. travel to overseas locations accounted for 45 percent of U.S. outbound international travel.

• Europe, a 13 percent share;
• Caribbean, an 11 percent share;
• Asia, an eight percent share;
• Central America, a 10 percent share;
• South America, a two percent share;
• Middle East, a nine percent share;
• Oceania, a one percent share, and
• Africa, almost a one percent share

North American markets received 55 percent of all U.S. international outbound travel, up two percentage points from January in 2013.

• U.S. travel to Mexico almost 45 percent share; and
• Canada almost a 12 percent share.

In 2011 OTTI began to report U.S. outbound travel monthly by all modes, expanding beyond air-only traffic. Total departure travel, inclusive of all modes, to Canada and Mexico is reported in addition to the air-only subtotals. The timing of this report is dependent on receipt of aggregate data from Stats Canada and Banco de Mexico.

⁽¹⁾ Overseas markets reflect non-stop air-only data. A portion of the non-stop passenger traffic to Europe will not visit Europe, but will connect through one of Europe’s airline hubs (LHR, AMS, FRA, CDG, MAD, etc.) to Africa and the Middle East. The adjustment to these regions, reflecting visitation (1+ nights), occurs after year-end data is compiled.
