Record-Setting International Visitor Spending in the United States
The U.S. Department of Commerce recently announced that international visitors spent a record-breaking $12.6 billion on travel to, and tourism-related activities within, the United States during the month of May - $1.4 billion more (12%) than was spent in May 2010 - marking the seventeenth straight month of growth in U.S. travel and tourism exports. Travel and tourism-related exports have increased, on average, nearly $1.4 billion a month in 2011.
- Travel Receipts: Purchases of travel and tourism-related goods and services by international visitors traveling in the United States totaled $9.6 billion during May, an increase of 12 percent when compared to last year. These goods and services include food, lodging, recreation, gifts, entertainment, local transportation in the United States, and other items incidental to foreign travel.
- Passenger Fare Receipts: Fares received by U.S. carriers (and U.S. vessel operators) from international visitors increased by nearly 14 percent to $3.0 billion for the month, setting a new all-time record for monthly passenger fare receipts from international visitors traveling America.
International visitors have spent an estimated $61.0 billion on U.S. travel and tourism-related goods and services year to date (January through May), an increase of 13 percent when compared to the same period last year. In fact, the U.S. travel and tourism industry is on pace for a record-setting year for travel and tourism-related exports.
Americans have spent nearly $44.5 billion abroad year to date (up 6%) - resulting in a $16.5 billion trade surplus for travel and tourism through the first five months of 2011.
