The New Orleans area has been devastated by the effects of Hurricane Katrina.
Please see the following note from U.S. Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez
Date: 9/1/05 5:01PM
Subject: U.S. Commerce Department Supports Recovery from Hurricane Katrina
From: Carlos M. Gutierrez, U.S. Secretary of Commerce
Subject: Commerce Supports Recovery from Hurricane Katrina
Commerce Supports Recovery from Hurricane Katrina
Many individuals in the Gulf Coast states of Louisiana, Mississippi, and
Alabama, including those in New Orleans and Mobile, are suffering from the
effects of Hurricane Katrina. Many others along the storm’s projected path
will likely be affected as this natural disaster unfolds. We are all
concerned about the health and safety of our employees and other Americans
whose lives may be affected by Hurricane Katrina.
The Department of Commerce has mobilized to respond to this disaster. For
example, NOAA’s (http://www.noaa.gov/) digital aerial surveys of impacted coastal areas will be available on the Internet today. Also, the Bureau of Industry and Security will use the Defense Priorities and Allocations System to prioritize procurement of goods and services such as temporary housing
and plastic sheeting for the restoration effort.
I strongly encourage all Commerce employees to support the victims of this
devastating storm, and I am grateful for the outpouring of support
already. Voluntary organizations tell us that cash donations to assist
victims are the most immediate need. Cash donations allow volunteer
agencies to issue cash vouchers to victims so they can meet their needs.
If you would like to donate cash, you may use the phone numbers listed
below, which have been set up for this purpose.
