Tourism Industries is pleased to announce the availability of the "Canadian
Travel to the U.S., 1997" report, the earliest ever release of this annual
report.
More than 15 million Canadians visited the United States for one or more nights
last year -- contributing $5.8 billion to the U.S. economy. Canadian visitors
constitute one-third of our international arrivals; however, market share from
Canada has been eroding since 1991 and stands at it's lowest recorded level.
In 1991, Canadian market share of international arrivals to the U.S. peaked at
45 percent.
Despite the marginal decline in arrivals in 1997, spending by Canadian visitors
within the U.S. actually increased. This may be due to an increase in the more
lucrative Canadian air traveler to the U.S. Travel by this mode increased 4
percent in 1997 and that increase was noted across 27 states.
New York, Florida, Washington, Michigan and California were the top states
visited by over 1 million Canadians in 1997, with California topping the one
million mark for the first time.
Travel expenditures in the U.S. averaged $54 per person a day, up 2 percent
from 1996. Spending by air travelers was more than double all travelers, at
$110 per person per day.
Key tourist activities include shopping, sightseeing, outdoor/sport activities
and visiting friends and relatives. Dining in restaurants, swimming and
visiting national parks were also favorite pastimes.
Several new tables and graphs are included in the 1997 report. Key among them
are the correlation between the exchange rate and Canadian arrivals to the
U.S., changes in Canadian market share, and U.S. states with double digit
declines. The 1997 report includes topical analyses at the state and census
region level such as:
Person Visits Length of Stay
Person Nights Expenditures
Province of Residence Mode of Transportation
Type of Accommodation Purpose of Trip
Season of Visit Activities
Gender and Age U.S. Border States
Seventeen tables, seventeen figures and twelve tabular or graphical appendices
complement the user-friendly text in this 46-page report.
This comprehensive analysis of our number one tourism-generating market is
offered free of charge. Unique among Tourism Industries' publications, the
Canadian travel report looks at state visitation to illustrate changes in
Canadian traveler characteristics over the past year, as well as changes
occurring at the national level over several years. This report has been
provided since 1980 and photocopies of back issues are available. To get
