1997 Annual Intl. Air Travel Statistics Available

Tourism Industries newest research program, the "U.S. International Air Travel Statistics" or I-92 data base, annual 1997 report is available for purchase. This report provides origin-destination air traffic figures for international flights to and from the United States. There are four sets of tables included in this 210 page report.

The information collected is obtained from the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) I-92 form. This form must be completed by all U.S. and foreign flag carriers who have United States international arrival or departure flights (excluding Canada). The I-92 provides air traffic data on the number of passengers by country, airport, scheduled flights, charter flights, U.S. Flag airlines, foreign flag carriers, citizens and non-citizens is available. In fact, it is the only U.S. government data base to provide estimates on U.S. citizen departures on an ongoing basis. There are arrivals and departures data on almost 120 countries, up to 90 U.S. airports, and over 280 non-U.S. airports.

In 1997, total arrivals traffic was 54,315,461 passengers. Some notable facts on arrival traffic to the United States includes:

Scheduled flights accounted for 95% of the total traffic, and 5% were charter.

U.S. flag carriers had 49% market share of all international passengers and foreign flag carriers had a 51% share.

U.S. flag carriers passenger mix was 55% citizens and 45% non-citizens. Foreign flag carriers passenger mix was 43% citizens and 57% non-citizens.

The U.K., Japan, Mexico, Germany and France were the top five countries for scheduled flight air traffic.

New York (JFK), Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco were the top five U.S. airports.

London, Tokyo, Frankfurt, Paris, and Mexico City were the top five foreign airports.

The 1998 prices for this data remain unchanged even though TI saw a budget cut for FY1998.
