The U.S. Department of Commerce, International Trade Administration (ITA)
issued a press release entitled: "New Tourism Study Shows California, New
York top Travel Destinations, 5/15/98." To see the press release, please
visit ITA's web site Press Room. The address is: http://www.ita.doc.gov/media/
Under the "ITA NewsBytes" you will see the icon for the release. There is
a link to TI's web site in the release. Once you enter TI's web site, the
1997 and 1996 overseas visitation estimates for selected states and cities
can be found by clicking on "Enter our web site Here" then scroll down
until you see the icons to click on: "New - Just Released: - 1997 State
and City Arrivals data." Overseas excludes Canada and Mexico. At that
time, TI only released the overseas data. For clients ordering custom
reports or data on overseas travelers to the U.S., our contractor for the
In-Flight Survey has started to develop these reports and send the data.
Please ensure you have your report or data formats finalized with our
contractor. To learn more about ordering custom reports see the section
on In-Flight Survey custom reports at:
http://tinet.ita.doc.gov/ifs/custom.htm
The 1997 In-Flight Survey data release is based upon the "largest"
collection ever of surveys on overseas visitors and it is the "earliest"
release of this data in the history of this program. TI released the
remaining 1997 In-Flight Survey data, and a new forecast for 1998-2001 at
POW WOW in Chicago at the press conference on May 25th.
At POW WOW, TI released world region and country profiles based upon the
In-Flight Survey data for the following regions/countries: Western Europe,
Eastern Europe, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland,
United Kingdom, Asia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Taiwan, South America,
Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, Oceania, and Australia. Some of these
two-three page profile sheets for 1996-1997 my also be ordered from our
web site. The new profiles will be added shortly. Until then, you can
order them by faxing Tourism Industries at (202) 482-2887. Please provide
a mailing address and phone number so we can mail you the profiles.
The 1997 "In-Flight Survey Report on Overseas Travelers to the U.S."
should be available to mail to clients who have paid for this report on
June 8, 1998, another first for earliest release! If you have not ordered
the 1997 In-Flight Survey report on Overseas Travelers to the U.S. (for
$650), you can do so via our web site. TI recommends that clients
ordering custom reports consider purchasing this report as well. Your
custom report and the report on overseas travelers to the country will
help you differentiate the traveler patterns and characteristics data for
your destination compared to the national average, to help you determine
what makes your destination unique.
TI would also like to request that our office is cited as a source for any
use of our data when you issue your own reports or press releases based
upon TI data. We would appreciate it if you would state us as the source
in the following manner: U.S. Department of Commerce, Tourism Industries.
This will further the statistical principle that all data should be
sourced. If you are providing the release and it is a custom run, for
example, then we ask that you double cite the source as both you and our
office. This also ensures that Tourism Industries is given due credit for
the investment of funds in this singular federal program for international
travel data.
