Tap Into the South American Travel Market: Attend DOC-Certified Events
The South American region has been a solid market for tourism exports, generating over 2,733,000 visitors to the U.S. in 1999. Despite recent, short-term economic downturns, the region has experienced a 29% growth over the past 5 years. In particular, three of the top markets in the region, Brazil, Argentina and Chile, have performed well in both arrivals and receipts to the U.S. Some quick facts about these markets:
- Brazil was the 5th largest overseas market to the U.S. in 1999, with over 665,000 visitors to the U.S. This market contributed over two billion dollars in travel receipts to the U.S. economy. Tourism Industries expects the Brazilian market to grow by 24%, topping over 824,000 visitors, by 2003.
- Argentina remained as a top 10 market to the U.S. (#9 ranking), with over half-a-million visitors to the U.S. in 1999. Their travel receipts to the U.S. totaled nearly $1.5 billion. By 2003, TI is forecasting the Argentine market to maintain its market position, and grow to 609,000 visitors, an increase of 21%.
- Chile experienced a growth of one percent in 1999, up to over 181,000 visitors. Chilean visitors spent $540 million in travel expenditures in the U.S. in 1999. TI is forecasting the Chilean market to grow by 30%, up to over 235,000 visitors, by the year 2003.
